Cancun is a tourist destination located in the state of Quintana Roo, on the Yucatan peninsula in southeastern Mexico. The Hotel Zone was established in 1971, and lies on an island, located between a large lagoon and the Caribbean Sea.
The Hotel Zone is easily accessible from the mainland by bridges, located at each end of the island.
The local population lives in the central area of the city proper.

The Hotel Zone has more than 90 hotels of excellent quality, five large shopping centers, restaurants, aquatic activities centers, discos and clubs, an archaeological site, and an aquatic park. Services of high international quality are offered throughout the Hotel Zone.

The remainder of the northern coast of the state of Quintana Roo can be visited from Cancun.
